Public Works projects collectively encompass a wide variety of engineering projects understood to benefit the general public. These projects are generally considered infrastructure-related, and include the design and construction of highways and roadways, water storage, treatment, and transmission systems, wastewater conveyence and treatment systems, flood control facilities (including dams), municipal airports, schools, recreational facilities, and alternative energy projects. Public Works projects are typically commissioned and financed by government entities, and by extension of tax revenue, the public itself. As such, these projects can be very high-profile, as they require a high level of accountability to taxpayers. Susequently, efficient project management and strict adherence to budgetary constraints is key to the success of these projects.
